Don't you hate how dusty fake plants get? And then they are such a pain to dust. Well tonight I learned a fun little trick from my fabulous mother in law.
She was over decorating my house (you read that right...I laid out all my decor and she decorated) and she saw my ultra dusty plants (to my defense they had been in storage for 5 months...ok lets be honest they would have been dusty regardless). She asked for a bottle of hair spray. I looked at her and asked why she wanted hairspray. She said that when she worked at a store years ago she noticed that the ingredients in those silk cleaners were the same as hairspray, but hairspray was much, much cheaper.
So here's how you clean those pesky fake plants.
First you need an ultra dusty plant. This picture does the plant no justice. Just trust me when I say that it was really dusty.
Now you take your dusty plant and take your cheap hairspray (I had Suave on hand:) and spray it all over the plant. Be sure to flip your plant over so you can get every side of the leaves. Then you will take your plant (after spraying it all over) and give it a good shake. And WAH-LA...a nice, shiny plant.
As you can see from the picture above the difference it made is AH MAZING. Not only is my plant green, but it's nice and shiny.

I'm going to do this right now!! Will let you know my results....
I ran across this post on Pinterest. I have a huge fake bamboo tree in my living room, that hadn't been dusted for the entire time I've owned it (9 years). I drug it outside and sprayed it down with hairspray, and gave it some good whacks with a towel to get the dust off. It worked beautifully! In less then 10 mins, my tree was dust free, shiny and looked better than brand new. Thank you for such an awesome tip!
Do you think this makes the plant more flammable?
Has anyone tried it a second or third time on the same plant as it gets dusty again? I'm wondering if it would get a bit sticky and subsequent dust would stick to it or if it would work as well again. I keep some artificial plants outside on my patio and they get dull with dust after a season or two. I'd like to try this but I'm afraid of turning them into permanent dust magnets.
I recently got an artificial garden screen for my backyard from www.forevergreenwalls.com.au and was wondering how to bloody clean it! thank you so much for this blog post, short and sweet :)
I have struggled for YEARS to clean my fake in house greenery and I've tried every cleaner known to mankind with no avail - until this morning. I used two bottles of hairspray on my tree and for the first time since I bought my tree (in the 1990's) my tree is clean! Thank you thank you thank you!! I can't believe how beautiful my tree looks. Thank you again for sharing!

I just placed all my artificial greenery in the dishwasher on "rinse only"(don't worry about the heat element as no heat in washing or drying is used on this setting). I placed the majority on the top rack (4 large & bushy plants), and not wanting to overcrowd it, I placed the 2 smaller ones below in the utensil holder. Make sure the sprayer arm isn't blocked from spinning, or the lower rack plants are not dangling too much. No need to add detergent of any kind because you'll find there's residual soap from previous loads. When cycle is complete, transfer all to the dryer and run approximately 10 minutes on air-dry only. Of course this doesn't take care of artificial trees but sure is fast and easy on the others! Plants come out looking brand new!

I make the grave saddles for our family plots, I always give them a good spray with cheap hair spray to seal them from the sun, keeps them from fading in hot sun. So I would spray them when ever you want.
Spraying it with hair spray will also help keep it from fading in the sun, I spray all my fake plants real good with cheap hair spray. Works great, especially any outdoor fake plants
I recently tried a fantastic tip from my mother-in-law to clean my dusty fake plants, and it worked wonders! After she suggested using hairspray, I was skeptical but decided to give it a shot. I sprayed my ultra dusty plants with cheap hairspray, making sure to cover all sides. Then, I gave them a good shake, and the results were amazing. My plants went from dull and dusty to vibrant and shiny in no time. It's such a quick and inexpensive solution, and now my fake plants look as good as new! Give it a try—you'll be amazed too!
